This deep purple, inky-red created by Penfolds, hails from the Barossa Valley in South Australia. The fun part of most GSMs is that the balance of these three varietals (Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvédré) usually produces an unassuming, yet fruity and quietly elegant wine.
The 2006 version of Bin 138 is right in line with the GSM profile. The blend of 39% Shiraz, 32% Grenache and 29% Mourvédré technically makes this an "SGM", I guess. Either way, the nose on this wine is delightfully floral, with notes of dried roses and damp woodsy earth followed by hints of leather and sweet sawdust. The initial greeting to the tongue is quiet yet rich, with a lush fruitiness of baked apples and cherries, and a smooth, medium-dry finish of vanilla spice.
This wine would pair well with red meat dishes that have sweet rubs, like BBQ, or any type of appetizer fare that would include creamy cheeses and sweet cured meats.
