Color: deep purple-red
Scent: warm leather and cedar, hints of smoke and spice
Taste: lush cherry, cocoa, finishes with a touch of fig
Notes: Perry Creek is a smaller (than many) winery that works hard to produce elegant wines with old-world flair. Some of their stuff can be a challenge to find, but their ZinMan is very popular.

Juslyn Vineyards Perrys Blend 2004
This blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc is bold and elegant. The color is inky-purple like blood. The nose carries aromas of spicy jam, roses, saddle leather and a touch of baked figs with sweet tobacco. From the start, this Napa red is a bit racy, with spicy clove and hints of cinnamon followed by cherries, raisins, and fig. The light tannin structure is balanced by raspberry and a surprising tang of cranberry. This gorgeous wine has a long, lingering finish that straddles the line between earthy and sweet.
Rivetto Dolcetto D'alba Ercolino 2009
This inky purple red starts with leather and spice on the nose, hints of smoke...
On the palate: tart cherry, raspberry, fresh game, back tea and dark fruit finish.
Overall: spicy but dry but very approachable with the right amount of fruit to balance - perfect for game dishes, hearty pasta or herbal veggie entrees.

Vina Perez Cruz Syrah Reserva 2005
This is one book that can't be judged by it's cover - or the scent of its pages, for that matter. Vina Perez Cruz's Syrah Reserva is not the first of its wines to display such a mixed personality, but it's all good.
The elegant, deep burgundy color is typical of a Syrah. On the palette, smooth ripe cherries swirl with pungent earth and sharp wood. A half hour of breathing reveals softer notes of blackberry and raisin.
The nose is what gets me - a hot mix of petroleum and mineral when I first open the bottle. I decanted it for an hour to see if that would mellow it out, and I was rewarded with aromas of plum, oak and eucalyptus.
In this case, the nose doesn't know what it doesn't know - and that is, the character of this tasty Syrah.
