This is one book that can't be judged by it's cover - or the scent of its pages, for that matter. Vina Perez Cruz's Syrah Reserva is not the first of its wines to display such a mixed personality, but it's all good.
The elegant, deep burgundy color is typical of a Syrah. On the palette, smooth ripe cherries swirl with pungent earth and sharp wood. A half hour of breathing reveals softer notes of blackberry and raisin.
The nose is what gets me - a hot mix of petroleum and mineral when I first open the bottle. I decanted it for an hour to see if that would mellow it out, and I was rewarded with aromas of plum, oak and eucalyptus.
In this case, the nose doesn't know what it doesn't know - and that is, the character of this tasty Syrah.
